I'm saying that many people struggle from paycheck to paycheck.. and others don't have enough to eat. Then you get yuppies blowing away money on ridiculous stuff.

I'm not trying to act high and mighty because I share some of these characteristics as well. Owning a reef tank alone makes me part of this group. Spending a lot of money on stuff that you don't really need. However, some just go way to far...

btw- enjoy your new PPE's

Forgot to ask:
Seeing Nanocat's tank is what drove you to it isn't it? I've been dreaming about it too ever since I saw it. Infact, in a different thread I was considering growing pot to finance my hobby - not a good career move

hey emerson, are you trying to corner the market on all the ppe's beign sold? didnt you win another big auction a month or so ago?
as far as my opinion, if you can afford to pay that much to winand not go terribly in debt, go for it! at least, now you will be able to say you have something that 90% of the other reefers out there don't have.

Finally found the thread. I have dealt with Emerson and he is an awsome person to deal with or talk to. As for living paycheck to paycheck, Owning a buisness is EXACTLY that. Some weeks are good, some weeks you go into extreme debt. Plus you pretty much put everything you own on the line just to try to make a buck. To me this is called dedication. So what's wrong with someone reaping the rewards of HARD earned money? Trust me, I owned a large off-road shop for over 5 years. It was some of the hardest, stressfull, and exciting work I have ever done. If nothing else he has the best bragging rights. Can you say you ever spent $800 on a coral?

well i wish i had the money. i would spend it also. thats what it is for.i just cannot belive how rare this zoanthid really is. i have contacted every online vendor and everyone on reefcentral and nobody has them or the ones that do will not part with them . so in my opion they are worth every penny and are probaly a good investment for years to come. we should always remember the day you could have had ppe's for only 800 dollars. at first i was mad because i did not win but now after reading and looking for them they are truely a rare zoanthid. good luck to the winner. i am sure they will someday bring back the money 10 fold. i on the other hand will save up and pay for them when i can afford them . wich will be sooner than i thought.
thanks for everyone's opinion and good luck with the next ebay auction.

Nothing is going to "return the money 10 fold" Even purple monsters are available for a little less now, than they were a few months ago. Eventually the fads pass, frags end up in everyone's tank in the neighborhood, and then some other unusual coral becomes the latest "must have" item.

I'm sure Emerson bought them because he liked them, not because he figured he'd make $8000 off them

Based on some of the posts from peeps who have PPE's, they're far from a sure thing. They seem to be more sensitive than other zoas, so we'll wish Emerson all the luck a tank can have

BTW, I don't covet your PPE's, but I sure do envy you those safecracker reds

i cant tell if you were kidding or not but you sound a little jealous =D, plus you are contradicting yourself

personally i think they are on the ugly side, and think there are better zoos out there, but truth be told, if there was some color i liked, rare or not id throw down big bucks to get it--thats just part of the fun **cough cough** safecrackers!! **cough cough**

I beg to differ. I have had several corals(mainly soft) that have returned my money 10 fold. If you luck up on a nice coral cheap and it grows very fast, frags alone can bring that. Have you ever talked to your LFS and actually seen their price sheet? I have and it would make you sick!!! Most order from a sheet that reads; acropora colonies assorted colors---- sm $7.50,med $15, lrg $20 and so on. Once they recieve them and see that one or two sm to md colonies are half way nice, they price them as "rare unidentified acro sp. from Bali". Knowing darn well they are not from bali,or Eva,Fiji,Christmas Island, or whatever the new "coral hotspot" is. They then turn around and price a 7 to ten dollar(plus their bulk shipping) for $75-$100. And people gladly pay it. Why do you think all of these online vendors have popped up recently. Very good buisness!!

I agree Emerson. On another note, many people frown on high priced frags. I wouldn't pay for them, but at least frags are a renewable resource which is not the case and considerably more risky with fish. How many people here have made a considerable ROI on coral frags?

I have seen the sme vendors price lists SEVERAL times and promise you they are correct. They let me see it (because I normally spend over $100 with them a week) so I can see the new availabilities, they know I see the price so I have to battle with them for hours to knock down their inflated price. They always treat me good though. I will get the name of the vendor next time I see them. I am sure that it is a very well known wholesaler but I can't think of the name.

I live in LA, we know the wholesalers and a few of us can shop direct from time to time. I wasn't referring to SPS frags, but PPE's. They grow very slowly, and if you do a search you'll see that several owners have started with 5 polyps, then 10 polyps, then 5 die off, etc. I'm simply saying that PPE's are iffy as far as an instant money maker, especially if you paid $800 for a few polyps

BTW, there's no secret to wholesale lists. Quite a few are online if you know where to look

I would love to know where to look. I have tried several and could get nothing. So I am now purchasing a buisness liscense and getting a federal tax I.D. # . I hope to be selling soon. I also deal with a cherry picker who travels to the wholesalers often. He will tell me nothing! How would I find a "cherry picker" what is the norm % they get? Any help would be great.

By the way, wtrhed's reds were impressive also! He has some choice zoas! I was impressed with that transaction also.

Nanocat, if I am successful with fragging the safecrackers in a month or so, I will pm you. They are beautiful! They exceeded my expectations!

After viewing your tank in your gallery, however, I can't imagine that you want for anything - that is some beautiful tank! But I'm always glad to make another reefer happy.

You are right, I didn't buy the ppes or blues to make money. I actually don't sell my corals. I leave that to the pros. I'm just a hobbyist. IF I frag - I usually give them away to someone who really wants them. Now I know that I'll hear from some on this forum about that.

I subscribe to the "pay it forward" mentality. So far its really working!

emerson

If you have the money.... more power to ya. The tank is for your enjoyment. And it's not like this hobby is inexpensive.

That's fine, but comments like that don't sit well with people work hard to make that extra buck. Granted, it may be frivolous to some, but I wouldn't knock them, not even jokingly. Sure there are people living paycheck to paycheck, but over half of them could improve their situation but choose not to. Being able to afford stuff like this is why we go to school and work hard. Believe me, if this country ever goes socialist, there would be an overnight shortage of doctors, managers, and engineers.

J, when you get done with school, comments such as easy money and must be nice aren't gonna feel good after you have studied your butt off and dropped thousands into making yourself a contributing member of society.

I'm in residency right now, and I can tell you that it's NO EASY MONEY! You work hard in the beginning, so that you can reap the rewards later.

I remember the days when I though that it's so ridiculous to buy BMWs and Mercedeses when you can have a Honda. But now, since I'm within striking distance, those things dont' seem so ridiculous anyway.

JEALOUSY is inevitable, when someone is making good money selling their zoos, sps's, whatever, etc. If you look at the theread earlier, someone got jealous also because I did well on ebay selling zoos.

as long as the item is properly represented, ebay is the ULTIMATE free market.

I love being envied. To me it just shows that your hard work has payed off and other people wish they could do as well as me. which they could if they would put more time into something wortwhile instead of worrying about how well someone else is doing and then felling sorry for their self.
