It is MUCH more likely that the eggs continued to hatch during the night and rest of the day. It is another wives tale that the eggs only hatch at night in the dark.

The male will continue to tend the nest until all are either no longer viable and become food or are hatched. He will get down right rough with them, which also helps stimulate hatch IMO.

As to your collection problems... See myth-buster on wives tale above.

Each pair and even each nest is different. Some nests take a long time to hatch. People seem to be under the impression that a nest starts to hatch and wham all the eggs hatch in a short (couple of hours) time. IME this is rare. It is more common to have a continious hatch run over the course of 12-48 hours, with a marked decrease during the "day light" hours and a marked increase in the 30min to 3 hour period after "sun down".

Put a tile next to the nest site and see if they will switch over on their own. Just make sure it is pretty stable and does move with the force they would use to "clean" the tile. Moving substrate is not a big winner in the nesting site selction market.

BTW, clownfish do not eat nests do to lack of food or hunger when they are well fed normally.

No problem, I want yo see you wildly succeed in this!

The pic of the larva you posted... They look a little skinny. Do they have a pronounced yolk sack when first collected? I would be a little surprised if they did, it seems like it takes several nests before a newly spawning or newly resuming spawning pair gets really nice nests, both in size and quality of larva. Until they are hatching with big yolk sacks, dont get your expectations too high.

Have you got a S-Strain culture going yet? It may not help, but I doubt it would hurt. You are using two strains of phyto right?

Yes they had nice size yolk sacks when I collected them, I won't get my hopes up this soon, but hopefully later
I got S and L strain going right now and two strain of phyto I bought from FAF.
They are alot smaller than the cin's larvae that I collected I guess because they are hybrids.

They are small because of the chrys in them.

Are they feeding? They should look like a figure 8 from above if they are.

I have 3 Ebo-Jabers and two other lesser known brands. I kept one of those digital thermometers in the tank and watched the highs and lows over several days on each of the heaters to find the most stable one. They all fluctuated way too much for my taste. I ended up using a Medusa temperature controller instead of relying on the heater thermostat. Otherwise, a room with stable, warm temperature would work also. Sorry about your babies. Better luck next time. I'm sure things will be better with each clutch. Keep up the effort.

Been there I finally went out and bought a good couple of heaters with teaperature dials because I froze and then cooked one batch. I know it sucks but you gotta spend the cash on the little stuff. I cut a corner on my filtration sponge and lost 2 recently. They got sucked into the filter.

Considering the value of this pair's offspring both from a "to the hobby" and a "to your pocket book" point of view...

I think it would be to your benifit to go to the next level in trying to rear these. If I remember right you are moving in the near future, so it would be the perfect time to setup a self contained rearing system while the pair gets themselves comfortable and spawning again.

Here is what I would recommend...

On the top a tank with lots of marco alge and pods going in it. Also put some pepermint shrimp or cleaner shirmp in there. Mysis would be nice too.

It flows down to rearing tanks with ~30µ screens on the overflow in the rearing tank to retain rotifers, etc. Excees flow from the top tank to overflow to the sump. Place a small LED light next to the outflow of the top tank that feeds the rearing tanks to attract the larva from the pods and shrimp.

Sump on the bottom with two heaters on a digital controller. Lots of filtration (LR and LS), skimmer.

By doing a setup like this you can maintain the temp and water quality. You can provide a much wider food source than in a self contained tank. Not too mention it will cut down on your work load considerablily.

It is a 40 Gal Breeder, nothing fancy. I'm running a power filter, skimmer and UV.
