Ca>480ppm, I'm bringing it down
dKH=9, ok
PO4=0ppm, ideal

1/06/08 after a water change
Ca= 480ppm, still a little high
pH= 8.2, I'd like it at 8.3
NO3= 10ppm, acceptable

I don't know if skimmers are the way to go. When you can just do a 10% water change by changing a gallon, why do you need to skim? You could do 10% every day and it'd be easy!

10% water change everyday isn't that good for the tank, and doing a gallon water change every day would really get annoying

10% a day isn't necessary, I just do 20% once a week. With the liverock and sand, I figure I have 7.5-8G of water in the tank, so I change out 1.5G a week, I've been running skimmerless with a mixed tank for a few months now.

10 gallon shouldnt need a skimmer, save some money, it should be 20g+ should get a skimmer. If you really want to go with a remora nano.

since the thread has evolved to what needs a skimmer and not and why...

I have a homemade skimmer on a 3 gal tank. It produced skimmate for a week or so and then it just started leaving the skimmate against the side of the skimmer below the collection area. The tank just doesn't produce enough protein to get the skimmer working like you'd expect. Now 4 weeks later, i've yet to do a single water change and nitrites are still 0, yet i haven't removed any skimmate from the collection cup, it's all just attaching itself to the sides.

I was doing about a gallon a week before the skimmer and nitrites were always high (reddish purple on the color charts).

It's definitely overkill and doesn't look nice. A better filter would do magnitudes better than a noisy skimmer, even if you had to do partial water changes every other week.

I have the Tunze Nano on my 15g and it pulls plenty of skimmate on a daily basis I also run 1200 + gph in the tank so the detrius stays suspended to be skimmed out
