Well its time to finalize what I am going to do with the spotlights. Im more interested in the distance from the water line, ceiling position and kelvin rating. Today, I am trying different angles and distances so I can make my final judgement. The 45 degree angle is important because this is where the deep coloring of the coral will present itself when one looks into the tank from the 3 glass sides.

As you can see, the good thing about the spotlight is that I can penetrate the corals during a certain time without having to spread the light all over the tank causing excess nutrient buildup with the main Giesemann fixture. Only the corals will feed.

Im surprised you guys like the 20k more. Hmmm. It's not as intense in person like the 65K. It must wash out with the T5's.

imcool, i work in the computer industry.

tbone, let me think about this.. .hmmm. I ordered 80lbs from RM, then 180 from LFS.. so about 260. These Tonga rocks were very heavy though. They arent porous like Buna. They are very solid. The shapes are awesome though.

EnFuego, once I get the spotlight completed, i will let you know. One of the fixtures snapped earlier from the stem. Wont be buying that model anymore. Im doing a lot of trial and error.

Loving the width...

This is what I was waiting for, I personally like the 6500k spot better, I like the brightness, and that yellowish natural look really does it for me, especially the fact that it is surrounded by the bluer light, the contrast is amazing, the 20k spot is ok but nothing out of this world. that 6500k really highlights that area and creates a focal point. As always looking good Ed,and keep up the good work.

I agree 100% with Zoos. The 65k spotlight really highlights that rock while the 20k kind of just blends in. The contrast b/t the 65k and the ambient light in the tank is wonderful.

Plumbing the Chiller

Jason was very knowledgeable and also explained to me the procedure for resetting the temp, but also changing the difference which is what I am after by changing the factory setting from 2 to 4. Thanks for the help.
Hi Edward,
First, may I say your tank, lights, and thread are awesome....as many have already stated. You definately are taking this hobby to the next level...hmmm or the level after that.

Anyway, on April 11 you replied to a thread I had started "plumbing my new 1/2hp PCI". That is how I found your thread. I read through the issues you have had with the chiller. When you were having your flow problems, were you using the Dart or the Barracuda with the CL?

Currently, I was planning on plumbing the chiller into my CL. I have a Barracuda on my CL with a 4-way OM. The chiller is going to be in the large furnace room across the hall from the fish room. I have not measured yet, but there will be a good amount of head loss going up 8' and across the hall (20') and back down to the chiller. I'm wondering if the Barracuda will be enough to give me the flow to the chiller and back to the 4-way OM.

When you decided to use a dedicated pump for the chiller, is it an external or submersible pump and how did you plumb it?

Thanks for your thought. Sorry to bring up the chiller again.

Rebecca

GSMGuy, they sure do. They can swim freely from one end to the other. I dont need a bigger tank thats for sure.

EnFuego, I have yet to come across a 10K spotlight. That would be the ultimate. Honeslty, it looks great already with the 65k. Actinics is the key in order to satisfy the brain's perception.

jnb, I will do so very soon.

nugz, I agree.. If I had steve weasts tank, I could add the brightest lights in the front and slowly add 14k's to 20k's towards the back. I bet it would look nice.

tanya, good question. I will try it out and see what it looks like.

bill, addo, zoos, thanks again!

Rebecca, thanks for writing. I remember you from the PCI chiller thread. The chiller has been working great ever since. It runs for a long time and then shuts off just like it should. From what you told me, it seems like you may run into the same issue as me. The only difference is that you will have the OM which will increase pressure a little bit more. I honeslty do not think it will be enough. I added the Aquamedic Oceanrunner 6500 and it is perfect. Very strong flow as well. I set it as an external pump. I also have it set where the chiller kicks on at a 3 degree temp difference which has also helped. As for plumbing it, all I did was I stole one of the CL loop output holes and used it as a input for the new pump. I can draw it out for you if you like?

Edward,
Thank you for your prompt response. I was afraid I might need another pump after reading your thread. Glad to hear that it is external. I don't want to add anymore heat to my sump.

Well, if you don't mind drawing it out, I would really appreciate it. I have an outlet coming off of my closed loop system specifically for a chiller so this would work well. You do seem to have a good knowledge on those diagram software programs. ;-)

Have a great evening. BTW, you have obviously been a wonderful resource for many of your fellow reefers. So, thank you again for all your time and effort to help us all out.

Rebecca

Ed, from 4 pages back...The size fixture I was looking for was a 3ft fixture, the new Maristar fixture will be sold in 2, 3 , and 4ft length, maybe even 6 for all I know. Most other brands don't have a 3ft lenth. I have pretty much decided to stick with what I have. I don't really think I need anymore light or something different. It is nice to be satisfied in this hobby once in a while .

The fish you are getting are awesome.
