I would also like to see what the difference is in PAR between the stock 15K and Phoenix. I bet it's substantial. The Phoenix has a fairly high PAR for a 14K.

Well unless I see them side by side I wont know for sure but the pictures make the reflux look as blue or bluer than my phoenix. This is all subjective of course. Especially with all the different size tanks and cameras taking pics of them.

Finally VHO Mod done

Finally got around to doing the VHO mod i chose the 24" lights for my 36" fixture because the 36" didnt fit in the fixture , the 24" is a 75w bulb i used the CF ballast that the fixture came with.im guessing they are being over driven since the ballast are 96w.i also used some regular T12 endcaps i took off a old fixture i had laying around, they are not water proof but since i will be using the acrylic splash guard i dont think i should be worried. well here are some pics.

as you can see i used the same reflector that it came with , i couldnt find 180 degree bulbs with the built in reflector im pretty sure that they might perform better with the built in reflector. By the way i apologize for the crappy pics, i have no picture taking skills at all and my cam is not the greatest, the VHO look very nice with the actinics on. the cam doesnt capture the true color.

HERE ARE THE VHO WITH THE PHOENIX 14K RUNNING ON THE STOCK BALLAST.

OOPS, You posted while I was typing. That looks great. You did a fantastic job!!

Do you have a before picture with the stock actinics as well? Also, do you notice more "pop" in the flourescent colors with the VHO? AND... Is your tank brighter with them or about the same?

the ones i used are not even waterproof i figured i wouldnt need them since they are going to be englosed, i got them off an old fixture they are regular T12 endcaps, probably a couple of bucks at Homedepot. Hellolights.com sells the waterproof ones for 9.99 for a pair.

2 24" vho bulbs =$42 for both lights
reflector was the one that came with the fixture the ones used for the PC. and the endcaps some old T12 endcaps i had laying around so pretty much just cost me $42 for the bulbs. the ballast i used the pc ballast the fixture came with just cut the straight pin plug and wired the endcaps.

Yep. It might work once in every 40 tries if you don't pay for it.

i never touch any of the electronic stuff? Do you need any tool to wire the endcap and such?

So basicly you saying these are the things i need to buy

2 new bulb
2 pair of endcap

And im set to go cause the rest of the stuff already come with the fixture such as wires, ballast...

Chrkra, yes pretty much i did the whole thing with nothing but wire cutters, a sheet metal cuter to cut the reflector and a screw driver, they wiring is pretty each and the endcaps actually screw into a rail thats in the Fixture so i didnt even have to drill holes. the whole thing took me like 1hr and 30 mins it wasnt hard at all,you might need extra wires for the endcaps, but thats about it.

Thats awesome with the VHO's. I wonder what it would look like if someone replaces the PC's with T5's. I know it would cost more but would be cool to compare with Rick's. Very nice DIY conversion.
