I have a Flameback Angel and it doesnt bother anything. I think all of them could nip at some corals but most people dont seem to have problems

A friend and I each have Potter's Angels in our tanks. Both fish spend the day picking at the rocks, and I think that the corals just happen to be in the way while they're picking. I don't notice them actively seeking out and eating any corals. I suppose the picking can possibly do some damage and some corals will be more susceptible to it than others, but if it's only one fish then I don't see where there would be a problem.

Only truly safe dwarf angels would be the Cherub/pygmy angel and some very closely related that i have not seen before in local fish trade. Many of them do seem more than capable of being kept in a reef though, but be willing to perhaps lose a coral or two especially if they are already stressed. I have experience with a bicolor angel in a 125 reef, added to rid it of aiptasia. He polished off a wesophylia brain that was half gone, and the remains of a trachophylia brain. Those two corals weren't going to make it in long run it seemed. After that he polished off all but one large aiptasia in an infested tank after a cpl months. He has since been removed during a tank replacement but was a model citizen after his first couple weeks.

I have a Flame Angel and a Coral Beauty. They get along and my corals and polyps are doing fine.

I have a Flame, Coral Beauty, and a M/F Bellus Angel pair. No issues at all.

Many pygmy angels are reef safe, but some are not. My coral beauty has never touched my corals, but I don't think there is any one that is guaranteed not too.

Sorry to hijack, but when they say fish may nip at corals, are they refering to SPS only or soft coral as well?

I have a flame in my tank. He never picks at any of my Xenia, Star Polyps, or Zoas. He grazes on the LR, but never touches the corals. Hope that Helps.

I have a Pygmy Cherub. Cute, smart, and doesn't bother anything. Dwarf Angels are smart little fish with distinct personalities so their behavior varies from one individual to the next. Try to find one that's been in a dealers tank with corals.

Fast Eddie-- "nippers" usually go for LPS corals and clams.

So "soft" corals such as torch coral, frogspawn, etc are normally safe from "nippers"?

I read as long as you keep them well fed they will not go after corals.

My Flame picks at everything, that's their nature. Never a erious probelm to any coral or fish (a bit of a tail chaser some times but that keeps everyone on their toes...or fins

Go for it!

Couldn't resist and just introduced a Flame Angel. Mostly picks at rock, but does pick at a couple SPS, one Acropora yongei in particular. Most significant consequence so far is that the A. y. polyps don't extend like they used to. What should I expect down the road? Wait and see or start looking for another home for the Flame Angel? If I need to remove it, what's the best way to catch it. Chromis will swim into a cup of mysis, but I don't think this guy will be that easy to fool.

You should have done your research in advance.

An Angel will nit pick; nothing that will or should be a serious problem to your corals or other fish. They are good tank mates in my opinion.

Be fair and provide this fish with a reasonable chance to have a nice home; God only knows up to this point it's life has been a bit hectic for him for sure!

Fast Eddie-- everything you mentioned are LPS corals (large polyp stony). Some angels will find them tempting. "Soft Corals" are leathers, mushrooms, polyps, etc.--- all corals with no skeleton.
