Purple Urchin

Hey Everybody, I am a chemistry teaching assistant. One of the other TA's who is in some biology class did a lab yesterday that involved "purple sea urchins." They had a few too many and were going to throw the rest away. He told me he took one that was doomed for the trash and just called me a few minutes ago to tell me that he has an urchin for me. I don't know anything about urchins and I told him that I would pick it up tomorrow morning. Is there anything I should know before I go and get this guy and put him in my tank? Thanks a bunch.

I love longspines, black or purple.. They love to eat all kinds of algae, red slime, coraline etc..
They even seem to help coraline grow by spreading it. I have had
a number of them and when they got too big I traded them in
at the LFS for a new small one and some store credit.

Wish I had someone handing me a few..

I would take them and enjoy, they are fun to watch!

( some people say they pick at corals, I have never had a problem! )

I main problem are knocking thing over and if they have long spikes then they can damage soft coral. Usually coral is pretty hardy so I say give it a chance but watch very closly. When ever you can save a life I say try.

k...thanks for the feedback guys. I usually like to do my own research but this thing was kind of "thrown" at me. I don't think I should be to worried because I don't have any corals at the moment in my tank.

Better prepare for all your guests oogling ?'s.

An urchin can provide plenty of them.
