Remove Emperor 400
When I started my 75g, I thought I was going with 45lbs of live rock so I got an Emperor 400 for some extra filtration. I decided to go with 125lbs of rock so I don't really need the HOB filter. Should I keep it on there and leave off the bio wheels. Also would it be any problem to keep mechanical filter media in the filter to suck out any big detritus.

It is fine to keep it as long as you continue to clean the filters, I do not really care for them because of the added noise, but they are fine for the extra filtering

They grow saltcreep like no other filter I have ever seen.

I have the penguin 350 and when I had my wheels in I would get a ton of nitrification build up inside. I removed the wheels and only use the filter inserts for catching debry, chemi-pure and phos control media and I no longer get the build up as well as my water conditions have improved big time.

Oh god is the salt creep awful. I accidently put mine to close to the freshly painted wall and guess what.
Mine are great little refugiums they've collected sand cause I never clean them and a million billion pods on the filter pad I never changed and looks spotless. Definitely adds flow and helps with aerating the water. And is nice for running carbon. Just don't pile rocks on the inlet so everything collaspses if you pull it out.

I have never had salt creep from the my filter. I keep it pretty clean though. When aquascapping I made a little I have a little tunnel going down with the inlet so I can remove it for cleaning. It usually only needs to be cleaned every couple of months, nothing big. Seriously ever since I removed the bio wheels I dont get any nitrification build up on the inlet or inside the filter.

I use a 280 for carbon only.

So it would be good for running carbon and other stuff. Would I have any nitrate problems with just keeping it for mechanical filtration.
