|
Protein skimmer for 30 gallon tank?
Hi guys/gals--what's the best hang on-type protein skimmer for a 30 gallon tank? I don't want to break the bank with this either, since wife is getting more and more tired of my money pit......thanks!

I have an AquaC Remora on my 40g. I think it's a fine skimmer for small tanks.

You can probably pick up a used Remora in the used equipment forum here on RC if you keep an eye out. I like the CoralLife Superskimmer too, but it's a little better/safer if you have a sump. I've seen the D&D Typhoon recommended a few times lately, although I've never had one or seen it operate in person.

Some people on the lighting/equipment forum have reported very good results with the $68 Typhoon It doesn't have a collection cup, and uses a drain line instead. You would need to put a hose on it to a bucket. It supposedly skims a lot better than a remora, but that is not saying much.

I just hooked my typhoon up the other day and it is working great. The only thing I had to add to it was a sock on the water return to keep the bubbles under control. I have a 30 gallon tank myself and so far I am very happy with this skimmer. Good luck!

Do I really NEED a skimmer for a FOWLR tank?? I don't plan to overstock it, just maybe a firefish, jawfish, a small star and a urchin, and couple more snails....nothing major. I have the Emperor 400 on it now and a powerhead (the emperor is rated to 80 gallons).

I would personally run a skimmer as well. Since the volume of water is relatively small, skimming helps guarentee that your water quality stays consistant.
My aqua C w/ a maxi-jet 1200 did an awesome job when I had my 65 gallon. With my 90 gallon going online here in the next week, I got a Aqua c remora pro w/ mag 3 used locally for 140. If you have any clubs in your area, check out their buy/sell area and hopefully you'll get lucky!

I think a skimmer is not NEEDED but rather preferred for your plans and size of tank. If you can keep up with 15-20 percent water changes every week then you don't really need one because you do at least have some form of filtration (the Emperor). Another good thing would be to get lots of live rock if you don't have a skimmer, to add to the filtration (maybe 1.5-2 pounds per gallon). Anyways, good luck.
