Can I keep an Eel in my 175 reef?
Does any one know if an Eel like a Moray can be kept in a reef with out it polishing off all of my live stock? If so what kind do you recommend?
Thanks Dan

Some folks do it. How do you have your live rock stacked. An eel my require you secure it with zip ties or epoxy.

general rule for eels is that if the fish is significantly bigger than the eels head, it is safe.

Also, some eels are much more passive. A zebra eel will most likely not even catch your shrimp, but a honeycomb will most definitely eat everything except large sharks

Lots of good information in that article but I caution you that my experience with a Snowflake hasn't been quite as peaceful as that man describes. He has eaten every clown fish he has ever seen (and dreams of more...), a scooter blenny, a niger trigger that was at least 6" long and a large # of damsels and shrimp. I saw a blue ribbon eel at a LFS the other day that I am told does not eat fish at all. But upon researching them learned that they are VERY hard to keep alive in captivity. The one I saw was all of 36" long, but was no bigger around than a sharpie marker. Freaky looking fella too! Good Luck. Karen

I have a snowflake in my 75 Gallon reef. with A CBS and 5 Fish. Hippo Tang, Sixline Wrasse, 2 Clowns Percs, and a Strawberry Dottyback. My eel has never touched any of my fish. and when it comes to corals all he does to them is rubs up against them. As long as you keep them WELL fed then there is no problem. With my experience, that is... My Eel is nearly 18 inches now and about 2 inches thick. And his head is much larger then my clowsn and dottyback.
I think you would be fine as long as you kept him well fed. Infact i plan on getting another snowflake for my 75. A Pair of Eels
