Sumps/overflows for non-drilled nanos

I'm having a dilemma that I was hoping someone could help me with. My tank is actually a 44 gal, but I'm posting this here, because I assume someone has run into this same problem with their nano. My tank is not drilled, and has been set up for almost 3 years. I am currently building a sump/refugium, and I've run into a snag on the overflow part. I've got my rockwork set up in a way that I don't have room for the normal overflow boxes that you see, so I'm looking for an alternative. I was planning on using a box that hung inside the tank, and was only big enough to hold a small powerhead. That box would pump water over the back of the tank and down to the sump. After some thought, I decided that wasn't a good idea, because if the power went out, the sump pump would pump water into to the tank faster than the overflow was pumping it into the sump. SO, someone gave me the idea of a durso standpipe sort of design that would hang outside the tank, and there would only be a U shaped section of pvc piping and elbows inside the tank that would act as the overflow. I don't have a drawing of this concept, but I'm hoping someone has already tried it and understands my thinking.

Does anyone have any experience/suggestions with this?

Thanks,
Brad

The problem with your idea is that the tube can lose suction in a power outage. That's why there are internal and external boxes with a HOB overflow.

You could put a sump/refugium above the tank, have a pump feed it, and have it gravity drain back.

Check this out. I don't have one, but they claim the siphon restarts after a power failure:

Check out what I did to solve that problem, might help you out. Look for the thread "juice's 24G nanocube mega mod" Shows a overflow weir that only takes up 5.5 inches of tank lid space, hangs only 2-3 inches into the water.

It does - best overflow on the market. (have used on in the past) Amiracle makes a good one too.
