Do you say something?
I've been wanting to ask this for a long time but never have for some reason. I won't be mentioning any names but many of you may know the place I'm speaking of.
What is the responsible reefer to do when entering a LFS, and seeing chronic poor tank and livestock management over the course of many years? It's so sad to walk into a store and see row after row of diseased, mangled, and dead fish of all sorts: clowns, lionfish, tangs, as well as algae-covered, dying corals, all wasting away in plain acrylic cubes without so much as a gravel bed. When passing by, I drop in out of curiosity to notice that the livestock is regularly rotated, though chances are pretty slim that any conscientious aquarist would ever purchase a specimen from the place. The rest of the store seems decent enough, at least to a point where they can subsidize the replacement of all the deceased marine creatures. Years ago, I asked the manager something along the lines of what happened to the tanks; those poor fish look awful, and got a grunt and a shrug in return. What do you do in this situation? Is it even a responsibility of any person to try to affect change? |

This is where someone chimes in and says speak with your wallet, and spend your money else where. I say hurt them by speaking the truth and informing other people. Its word of mouth that will help you or hurt you the worse IMO.

Or you could just break in and rescue all the fish
![]() Dont buy their stuff, and they will stop carrying it. Yeah, its not the LFS bashing way, but its the best way |

You'd think so, but the store has been doing this for at least eight years (judging by the various art on the walls, probably much longer), hence why I hinted that the sw section couldn't be a self-sustaining operation. As happy as I am to not spend money there, I was just wondering what others would do in the same situation. I'll look elsewhere for conversation on the topic so as to avoid "LFS bashing". Thanks anyway.

There is a place very close to us that fits this description. I refuse to shop there.
Stores know how many fish are dying and that they are not making money. If they wanted to change they would. There is nothing a customer can say, and I bet some have, that will make them change. |

I was just in two local stores today. I would consider both of these stores to be responsible. In one of the stores today, there was one dead fish in with all of the healthy fish. I went to let management know and before I could even speak with the employee, another employee was ALREADY removing the fish. That's the kind of store that I like.
If I feel fish are being mistreated, I would probably say something but I doubt it would make a difference. Like others, I feel that "speaking" with our wallets is the only thing that will work.

The one I am am talking about is not a store you would ever visit cause it's not on any STL saltwater store lists and no one in their right mind would ever tell you to go there.
