I bought a 90 from a guy that had put an epoxy/sand bed in the tank. I don't know how long it had been in there, but when I went to clean the tank I noticed the sandbed starting to lift. So I inspected it more, and it had grabbed the silicone in some places and started to pull it away from the glass. I ended up having to take the faux bed out, cutting away all of the silicone in the tank and re-filleting the seams of the whole tank and overflow. It was a real PITA.
The good part was that the faux bed came out in one nice solid chunk. I cut 1/4 inch off of the front and side with the table saw, and slipped it back in the tank after I resealed. The faux bed is now just sitting in the bottom, sort of like a floating floor in your house. So based on my experience, If I were to make one, I would make myself a mold for the epoxy instead of making the faux bed in the tank itself. It sure does look nice though. -J
