Sulphur denitrator and hydrogen sulphide gas
Hi people,
I have recently installed a sulphur based denitrator (running for 10 days now). My nitrate levels have already dropped from 50 ppm to 25 ppm after the first week of running (Salifert test kit). However, till now I'm still a little concerned about the effluent. The effluent has been passed through a second chamber containing ARM media to help in buffering the pH. However upon exiting the second chamber, the effluent has been having the strong smell of hydrogen sulphide. I have concerns about the impact it will have on my tank but so far everything is alright. Am I running it correctly or should I try increasing my drip rate further such that the smell is not as strong? The current drip is already at 4-5 drops per second. I suppose if I increase the feed through the sulphur denitrator, it will become less anaerobic and hopefully less hydrogen sulphide is produced? I'm only worried about losing efficiency. Currently I'm not monitoring the ORP value within the denitrator so any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks.
