Diamond bit hole saws for free!
Anyone know where I can get some diamond bit hole saws for free! (lol how may people are going to look at this page thinking I'm giving out free bits, lol)
Ok seriously I need help. I would like to order some hole saws that will work on glass or acrylic and are the right size for 1/2", 3/4" and 1" bulk heads. Any suggestions as to what I am looking for? Perhaps point me at an ebay auction or an item number on a website? Jon |

I second harbor freight, or home depot- There not that expensive until you start getting into the larger sizes.

These work on glass with all of the 1" sch40 bulkheads I've used:

I go with a tile cutting bit for my rotozip or dremel. I can cut any shape or size hole in a fraction of the time, never break the glass and I only need one bit rather then a variety of expencive hole saws.
For acrylic you can use the spiral cutting bit for the same tool. Home Depot has the the tile cutting bit for about $8 and I believe the spiral cutting bit is cheaper then that. There are several threads on RC that detail people using these bits to cut Glass or Acrylic. Last edited by Pyrojon; 02/12/2007 at 09:50 AM. |

lol I should stop signing my threads Jon and just stick with Gordonious. It's unique enough. doug I have a ton of different little projects. I did as you recommended and purchased the coping saw and cut the pieces. I could only find hole saws that were like $30 and since I took my gf with me I didn't have a lot of time to look around. I made all of them just using my coping saw and my dremel, but have only attached the bottom four.
They came out pretty ugly. I took pics and meant to post them, but my d@mn lap top is messed up, so it's been a bit difficult to update stuff on the web. I got the bottom ones attached because they can be hidden easier and are more crucial then the top ones which don't have as much cracking and won't be under as much pressure. If I could have drilled my own holes months ago I would be so much further along in the progress of my projects, so it's time to shake the fear of cutting glass and buy the saws. Then I can also cut out the top washer donut things pretty like and install them. They will be a lot more visible. I will try to post photos in a moment to clarify. rayman45 any more details on that one? lol. I can't exactly google for a place the ships some type of drill bit for 9$ shipped. Jon I mean Gordonious In this image you may be able to see the bottom two holes and top four holes to see what I mean there. |

So as you can see in the bottom image it's a bit ghetto, but it does the job. The ring on the inside is the larger one so it covers plenty. These are easily hidden by the 2-3 rocks that will actually be in the tank. The top four will be clearly visible and will be eye sours if I don't make them nicely. For those of you who haven't seen my other threads this is a FO tank and will be pretty wide open with little decoration and lots of swimming room.

if your in need for more donuts, my offer still stands.
btw they dont look bad. they will get covered soon enough. the key with using a coping saw and getting good results is soft hands. |

Thank you everyone for your input. Appreciate it greatly. I'll check out my options some time before this weekend.
phreak312, PM me if you have questions about that animal. Only those prepared to set up a large FO or species tank should have them. Please lets not get off topic on that animal, half of my threads that mention it or have a picture get off topic and start talking about it. I need to start blurring it out of the photographs like the mystery fish your not suppose to see. |

A spiral cutting bit resembles a drill bit, they come with every rotary tool larger then a dremel. My RotoZip came with a few, but you can buy them for the dremel as well.
They are great for cutting just about any material that is soft, like wood, plastic, drywall etc... I pasted in some links but they didn't work. Try going to homedepot.com and looking up RotoZip. You will find the tool and the bit. Jon |

For plexi you can just use a regular hole saw (like for wood). Just get the plug out while it's still hot (tends to melt some then stick inside the hole saw).
Definitely diamond hole saw for glass. Can be done w/Dremel, but doesn't seem to be worth the extra effort & less clean of a hole.
