Wow, we're getting a good list here. Lots of old movies that I had watched in my younger days and forgotten about.

The Birdmen.

I remember liking this movie, but I was also in Junior High School at the time. Don't know if I would like it now or not. They escaped the POW camp by building a glider.

I have most of these in my DVD/video collection. Most of these are very good films. Heres a few more;
Zulu
Gettysburg
Memphis Belle

Playing in theaters now are Flags of our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima, Clint Eastwoods companion films about Iwo. Although not technically war movies Schlindler's List and Hotel Rwanda are also very good.

Sand Pebbles, an old favorite. Most of the good ones have been named.

Odd, but I got the same sort of feeling watching Zulu that I got watching Gettysburg -- both great movies. I was just overwhelmed with the bravery and valor of the Zulus and the Confederate soldiers when, near the end of both movies, they mount charge after charge, facing certain death. Incredible.

FWIW, I'm an army brat. Dad landed at Normandy in WW2. Later I was born on a U.S. military installation in France. We were on Okinawa in the '60's. Mom was a nurse at the Army hospital there where soldiers were evac'd from Vietnam -- she saw a lot of tragedy. I don't love war, but I sure respect the people who willingly sacrifice in defense of our freedoms.

Not fictional, but the World at War DVD series made in the 60's (?) is well worth the time. If you haven't heard of it, it's a 26 volume BBC series. I used to use selected pieces of it when I taught high school US History. Very moving.
