why are people still bothering with this thread??? Dont people have better things to do than keep saying the exact same thing over and over in this thread? Like maybe going to other threads and helping out with people who actually have questions???

I never have a problem with search feature as a premium member. Can't believe how pathetic some are with their griping.

How many websites do you know who owns it and what is done with the money? Do we ask that when we buy something at Sears, when we check into a motel room, or when we buy a hamburger? What business is it of ours what is done with the money? I don't see the words non-profit anywhere (if it is, I have missed it).

I gladly pay my money, get way more than its worth in research and information.

Lee

I'm just saying, if more money would help the site run better by upgrading to more or better servers, then it might prompt more people to buy a premium membership if they knew that. It would seem like a simple common courtesy to let everyone know at least roughly how it's dispersed. When I signed up, all I knew was what the premium membership got me, not where the money was going. If it has to be a big 'secret' for whatever reason, then, so be it. I've gotten my 25 dollars worth of knowledge and entertainment from this site.

It would be nice to know how it's split up. I don't care if the moderators are compensated. I just think it would help a lot if we knew how much was actually going to site improvement. If they came up with a donation pot for new servers, I'd probably donate something to it too.
Based on the growth I've seen here in the last year, the problems are only going to get worse. I trust that there's people on top of it.

A good dedicated can be had for less than 80$/month on a 100mbits line.

So the site "should" cost less than 4000$/years which is 160 premium member @ 24$.

That cracks me up... (server admin 101 coming up)

I can actually put you on a dedicated server for $69 per month with a 100mps pipe. However you are going to be limited to about 50 concurrent users due to the power of the machine. If I put a 100mps pipe on that same machine you will still get only 50 concurrent users.

Pipe size has almost no bearing at all on this site. Without seeing the logs I would be that all 5 servers combined run less than 10Mps at any given time. The delays are caused by "mysql" requests waiting in line from one of the 4 apache servers to the 1 mysql server. The mysql server probably runs in the neighborhood of 250-500qps when things start getting busy, not much data, just a lot of requests

Any dual core dual CPU with 4G DDR2 and 250G of hdd is going to start at $359 per month and for this site will run just fine on a 10mps pipe.

Here is a log for a server that has a site that is rated in the top 10,000 of the most popular websites on the net. As they do not use Mysql, there are about 100 other sites on the same server. If they use MYSQL .... (ouch)

This is the actual bandwidth

And total traffic

I think that whoever created reefcentral is a very rich man. That is a good thing and he should be fo making such a great site.

On that note, if you want me to make you richer, offer me something more than a search feature. Otherwise we are stuffing money into his pocket. Also, Reefcentral has to make a killing of advertising. I can't tell you how many times I have clicked/bought stuff from reefcentral sponsors.

Also, the non-paying members do "pay" for this site. They click on sponsors links, and create "buzz" about products. So just the mere fact that the non-paying members are on the boards, they are in a way, paying.

Beerguy usually responds to these threads and he is on vacation this week. I am sure he will respond when he returns.

I would say the problems we face occasionally are not strictly hardware related. I won't say more because I have exceeded my level of systems knowledge.

Oh, except to mention that the "estimate" of premium members in a previous post is incredibly inflated.

As soon as that happens, you can not get involved in these controversial threads as a participant... takes all the fun out of arguing back and forth

Please link me to the site for a good dedicated $80 server.

Here is a link to the cheapest VPS(not dedicated) server place that offers decent machines I know of. www.canaca.com
The last server I rented from them is limited to 400mhz of cpu out of a dual core server or 1/10 of the box for $45 per month. Plenty to run a business web site but not a forum with 2500 active users.

I just want to clarify here since the implication you make is that RC makes money from click-throughs or gets a portion of what you spend with a sponsor. That is untrue.

There are other things you get with a Premium Membership besides the search engine availability (and more things coming---see my previous post and link to the "Warm thank you " thread).

Actually that is interesting. If they would sign up for the google adsense program they would have another source of income.

According to them, they get about 12,000 unique visistors/day.
With 10 ad impression per visit each day there would be 120,000 impressions. With a 1%CTR (click through rate) and and average of $0.10 per ad, this would yield $120/day.
