Started this in Nano

I am getting two pairs of Latz Clownfish (wide banded clownfish) anyway I don't have my 115 gal tank, where both the clowns will be housed. (divider down the middle)

I am wanting to house them in 2x 11gal tanks (for three months) this will be temporary housing.

I was wondering what would be the best way to filter these tanks? They will be connected to each other, I want a 1'' of LS on the tank and around 5LBS of LR. Small amount i know but I want to give them as much swimming space as possible. No other fish/coral/invert will be kept in these tanks. so around 10LBS of LR in total, I wanted to rely on natural filtration but I would need 20 LBS. I am considering of getting a small 5gal tank and FILL it with LR and connect it to the tanks.

I have been told that I could run a external canister filter with Media in it but I have read that it will not work?

Could really do with your help
