My Maxi Mod

Here is a video of my Maxi-Mod at work. I will make a more asthetically pleasing shroud on Monday and repost some pics. The flow is extremely wide and random with my design.

Enjoy!

Jim Mod

Later,

Jim

Wow, Jim thats looking pretty cool. Are you running any other powerheads in that movie, or is all the flow from your MJ-mod?

Just flow from the One MJ1200 and my return pump. I will bring a Mod to this Saturdays meet if someone has a spare MJ 900 or 1200 to adapt ..

The great thing about my Mod is you utilize the existing components of your Maxi jet. All you need is a 1435 Prop, couple of parts from Lowes and your ready. This thing is painfully easy to make, and no noise. I would recommend putting this on some sort of wavemaker to get the benefits from the alternating current of the pump..

I plan to have 4 of these in my 90 on a Wavemaker or timer.

I've got a spare 1200 that I'd like to mod; I'll bring it. And I believe the meeting is on Sunday.

Nice job Jim! Can't wait to see what 4 of them will do to a 90 gal.

How to make Jim's Maxi Mod

here it goes:

1435 Prop slide on to impeller (You need to remove a small portion of a manufactured bur in the impeller shaft)

[IMG][/IMG]

Glue Prop onto shaft

[IMG][/IMG]

Buy these at Lowes or HD

[IMG][/IMG]

Insert Test cap into plug

[IMG][/IMG]

Cut bottom of Test Cap out with Rotozip or Dreal or Razor Blade.

[IMG][/IMG]

Remove Test Cap rom Plug

[IMG][/IMG]

Mark center of Plug

Drill 1/4" Hole in Center

[IMG][/IMG]

Remove PVC as shown

[IMG][/IMG]

Turn plug over and remove PVC as shown

[IMG][/IMG]

Here is what it should look like

[IMG][/IMG]

Using the Maxi-jet outlet as a stencil

[IMG][/IMG]

Make marks to cut out

[IMG][/IMG]

Cut them out

[IMG][/IMG]

Remove O-Ring from Maxi

Place ring on Maxi

[IMG][/IMG]

Make sure everything is realatively level and square and Superglue the Shroud to the Ring as Shown

[IMG][/IMG]

Take your 1" Nylon Bolt

[IMG][/IMG]

Insert it into the pre drilled 1/4" hole

[IMG][/IMG]

Drill a 1/16" hole into the base of the bolt (I pretap before drilling)

Here's what it will look like

[IMG][/IMG]

Put a 1/4 Nylon nut on bolt and secure to cover

[IMG][/IMG]

Insert Impeller assembly into nylon screw and housing

[IMG][/IMG]

Attach housing to Maxi body

[IMG][/IMG]

Create WAVES!!! I have made 2 of these and both work awesome. very quiet and will cycle on and off on a timer with no problems.

Good luck with your Jim's Maxi-Mod...

Cool Jim.....How much flow do you get with this mod of the mod?

How long does it take you to fill a Gal sized ziplock bag?

No clue how to even attempt that test.. It is enough RANDOM flow to keep my BB stirred up nicely and my SPS waving in the breeze and the bottom of my reef Detritus free... Plus it is simple, quiet and very inexpensive to make. I am now wondering if there is a better prop to use for this mod... Oh well, I'll let someone else figure that out.

We'll make one this Sunday at Marvins. I've got all the supplies in hand, and someone will go home with it as my contribution to the raffle (Since I am NOT Nudi free and in a position to trade Frags..)

1 1/2" Plug Spigot. Lasco part # 449015RMC from Lowe's. I only wish they had some Schedule 40 in gray in stock

nice job. i think if you went with two of those and one regular mod you would be set.

one thing you might want to consider is some sort of grating over the output to prevent a fish chopping.

Wow, I'm impressed. I like how it has a lower profile than the normal MJ.

Looks great Jim! Thanks for the play-by-play. I'm looking forward to seeing these mods perform in a tank in person.

In the video it looks like the MJs are pointing down? Is the flow shooting straight to the bottom of the tank?
