Should I clean my refugium?

I up graded to a sump/refugium mid Aug. LS, LR and Cheato is growing strong, but I have, what looks like, red cyano growing on the surface and back glass. I have been trying to get rid of cyano blooms in the sand bed of the main tank for a while, could the cyano be leaching from the refugium, to the sump, to the main tank? Should I be cleaning the refugium? My impression of a refugium was to let it go... no cleaning, no maintenance... just to let things grow and populate. Or am I wrong?

The Cyano will definitely spread to and from other areas in your system. I wouldn't "clean" the fuge but I would at least try to clean out the Cyano. Scrape it off, stir it up and syphon it out. Maybe invest in a UV sterilizer.
