how to plumb poly rubbermaids

well ive just got two 50g poly rubbermaids that im wanting to plumb into each other. the problem is they need to be side by side and both on the ground. whats the best way to keep water cycling between the two under these circumstances? TIA

drill a hole, and pop a bulkhead on them. connect them

or use the 2 that are on the bottom and connect with PVC
