do bubbles caused by the drain affect protein skimmers?
I was wondering if it affects the skimmers ability to skim if there is a lot of bubbles caused by the drain from the display tank...... Any ideas?

If the skimmer is direct fed from you overflow then bubbles can affect the performance of the skimmer.

Yes, it does. A few are fine, but not a lot of large disruptive bubbles. There are ways to plumb an overflow to not have this problem.

its just an in sump needlewheel. I have the drain going into a filter sock but would like to find a way to get rid of the socks

In that case, no. Only if it is direct fed is there a potential issue.
