Freshwaterfish question
Could you use sand from an used to be used saltwater aquarium for a freshwater tank. I couldn't find any other place to put this thread. Thanks!!!

I would think that if you rinsed it out well that it would be fine.

Usually yes, factors to consider would be the type of sand and type of FW fish you will be keeping with it.

It depends. Is the sand aragonite based? If you add freshwater (assumed to be 7.0 pH) to aragonite sand, it will react with the sand, dissolve it, and release Calcium and Carbonate back into the water which will raise the pH.

Aragonite sand would be excellent for an African Cichlid tank. That's what I use for substrate.

if it is a limestone or aragonite base, you should use it in an african cichlid tank. but not an african rift lake tank. if it is silica you can use it in any.
