I drive a toyota - expecting 300000 miles before anything craps out...

Funny - I asked myself the same question. How could I justify a skimmer cost approaching $1K? Materials selection, fabrication cost, assembly, test time. You're paying for the whole package. Now if they were mass produced it would be a lot cheaper.

Why do you have to use acrylic? Drive the price down my using another material... Of course I have a DIY gravity feed acrylic airstone skimmer from 1999!! Works great, and at about $50 for tube, fittings, pump, and stones it's well worth the money, effort, and satisfaction.

vr-4? if so, very cool and nice car! ...but it isn't fwd if so, as i'm sure you know.

sure, a race-prepped (even from the factory) fwd vehicle (srt-4, mazdspeed, type r, etc) will outhandle a factory-issue 3-series. race-prep that same 3-series and you might think differently.

and to keep this on-topic, i started out with a seaclone and now own an mrc w/ dual becketts.

Right, but that raceprepped Mazda/etc is still cheaper than that factory issue 3 series.(my mazda is a 3GT. it was originally imported to canada, and has slightly different stuff than a 3s) Thats exactly my point here though, and the same point I'm trying to make with the skimmers.

I guess my point is this: Pull the pump of an AP600, and throw it on an ASM G2, or an $80 DIY body, and you're not going to notice the difference between them. The ONLY reason theres a point in buying a Deltec (IMO) is that they've driven the price of that Eheim needlewheel so high that its not really worth it to buy them at $350+ each, adn then DIY a skimmer.

I've got a PC3000, nice big 8" diameter skimmer, 24" tall (same size an asm G4, or ER8-), with an OR3700 on it, and 199 for it.

reeftanksupply.com, which has since gone out of business. Custom aquatics has it for 239 right now. (i'm not talkign about the PCS-3000, which is 30" tall, and recirculating)

I recommend the SeaClone 100 or 150. Around $150.00. JD

That, IMO, is the most overpriced skimmer there is.
Something like this is similar cost, and a million times better product.
