Styrofoam reef safe?

Fellow reefers,

I want to put something in the bottom of a couple sump compartments to dampen the noise and vibration produced by pumps. I am thinking of using styrofoam (polystyrene), but first I want to know, is this material reef safe?

Thanks!

It should be. The only drawback would be letting tiny bits get into the water, where if ingested by a fish, it could cause fatal bowel obstruction.

I have seen people use those silicone (I think that's what they're made of - they are usually red or blue) trivet/pot holder thingies that you can buy in Wal-Mart or Target.

Somebody else once told me that you can just put dabs of aquarium silicone on the bottom of the pump, so the pump doesn't sit directly on the bottom and doesn't make the vibrating noise. That would seem to be the cheapest way to go, but you would have to leave your pump out long enough for the silcone to dry.

I have a mag7 skimmer pump that was making a small vibration. I put 4 small dollops of aquarium silicone on the bottom of the pump. (Like having four little feet that contact the bottom of the sump) and that solved the problem. Very reef safe!
