New Product...??Maxi-jet extension piece (like Turbelle)

Was just @ the LFS & saw a new product at work in their SPS tank & was wondering if anyone can give me a name...as the clerk was not very informative...big surprise...It was a Maxi-jet 1200 with a turbelle like extention similar to a tunze or Seio. It had a very nice flow stream. They said it was a product that they will be getting in...but did not know when...?? Does anyone know what this is, or where & when it will be available? I looked at the Aquarium systems website & saw nothing similar so I am guessing it is an extension added on made by another company.

Please help if possible

Thx

It started as a DIY. I know some people have already caught on and are trying to market it.

FWIW... You can build one easily enough with some basic tools.

This was done on using a miter saw and rotary tool (like Dremel)

Out of curiosity how much was your LFS selling it for?

This mod gives the MJ1200 almost to much flow... Much more flow then the Tunze streams on the other side of my tank.

$60

What a ripoff IMO.
You can build one yourself for $4 - $10 in materials.

It wasn't my idea

The idea of using a propeller to move water in a reef tank has been around for a long time since the nineties. Also remember the ReefTec?

http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issu...002/review.htm

Tunze got the same idea from that for their Stream pumps.

What cracks me up is when some numbnut goes on and declare that it's his invention and he's going to file a patent on it.

Here's a nostalgic photo of a Reeftec right next to a Tunze.

...must've missed that thread...thx
Yeah it doesnt look too complex...havent completely read the 2 threads but it must have a lot to do with tweaking the side vents & the type of prop

Like I said, they didnt really tell me about it, just said that they will be carrying it sometime in the near future. Didnt quote a price but judging by the store I'm sure it'll be astronomical. I'll do a bit of digging next time I'm in there, to see whose putting it out.

Anthworks - which mod gives you too much flow the one pic'd above?

I'll probably end up making 'em instead...sweet

I have a 1200 mod on one side of the tank and two streams on the other and the flow from the Maxijet out performs the 2 streams? Its a 5 foot tank. This is an unscientific study but its what I noticed.

Only problem is that I'm not much of a DIYer. I would be interested in buying one though. Would probably be cheaper after factoring in ER visit, insurance deductable, missed work...you get the idea.

Any info on who's selling them?

I'd love to see what your impeller looks like. I have 2 MJ mods I bought through a RC member that are cnc milled parts. Neither flows anywhere near what my tunze streams do. I also have a seio 820 that clearly flows more than the modded MJ's.

i have a pair of mj1200 that are modded, they move a LOT of water, the guy you got your mod from makes his prop rather than use a real prop like from tower hobbies, so that is prolly why the flow isnt the greatest. i have a video uploading right now of the 2 1200 in my tank. only other flow in the tank is from 2 penductors, one is turned down to about 30% and the other is at about 70% power and then about 600 gph fromthe return pump. the flow from these 2 mj's is far far greater than the flow from the 2 penductors in my tank.

I think yours are from Lutz if I'm correct in my assumption. Yeah he made his propeller which I do not understand why he did that - reinventing the wheel so to speak.

Your "propeller" is too thick and generate way too much resistance to be very efficient at creaing flow. There may also be a lot of vibration because of this too.

Using propellers of certain size and type will make or break this mod as well.
I've known people who have replaced their Tunze with the maxijet-mod while others couldn't get theirs to spin without help.

there is the video showing how great these things really are. note the full tank surface aggitation.

dh, yes that is the person, i wasnt gopnna name any names but you can. after first seeing his design i knew it was full of flaws and inefficiency. function should always come before looks, where as i feel his design is kinda the other way around. butthen again thats what one gets for trying to make money off a very well shared and multi member input DIY idea, carma is great.

Can anyone direct me to a MJ1200 mod link that will show the entire process. I'd humbly like to make one but need to be spoon fed...it's the MJ1200 I'd like to mod, not the MJ900. THANKS.

I was reading that theres also a lot of slip in his design where the piece he made slides aroudn on the shaft, so isnt spinning as much as it should.

I've got one for dhnguyen, and it outflows my Seio820s buy a good deal. I've got some changes that I think will make it better when I make a couple more, but we'll see.
