Interesting Enclosed Ecosystem

These were first developed by NASA. Really interesting enclosed system that can last for years. All it needs is light.

I feel like there should be the voice in the background indicating, "if you order now....get the 2nd until for $9.95."

Seems like a lot of money for a glass ball.

Yea, they are pricey. Don't think I would shell out that type of cash for one.

I do like the concept though and there is science involved with the product. Sealing an ecosystem within a glass ball is a pretty interesting concept.

Considering it is a sealed/closed system...Is the H2O charged with extra O2? Last I checked, even marine life required O2 to some degree whether it be in the the water, etc. Maybe that is the recharge they refer to.

I agree...the concept is neat.

I believe that the algae within the sphere provides enough o2 for the inverts to consume. That's the reason only light is needed.

I'm sure the shrimp then provide phosphate (fertilizer) for the algae. The algae then uptakes the phosphates, similar to our macroalgae in refugiums.

The interesting part is how the cycle can continue to operate for years. I believe the "recharge" is due to the natural life spans of the inverts within the sphere. Evidently, the average life span of the shrimp ie copepods are four years or so.

Yes, I agree interesting concept when you really think about it.
