Why not halogen?

Maybe the answer is obvious, but I picked up a couple of 250 Watt Halogen work lights to help light up the garage for $10 at HD.

My God they are bright, why can't we use them for reef tanks?

Light Spectrum? Life? What?

I think halogens are around 3000 K. Too red for corals.

I have another maybe stupid question about this. Why couldnt you put 10000K Bulbs in a $10.00 fixture?

I'm not sure about this but I don't think they make them.

If the light is to red a filter be used to remove the red?

Halogen spectrum sucks and they're about the most energy inefficient bulbs out there - the only real use I've seen for halogen gear is to retrofit the halogen shop lamps as an HQI mount - instant reflector. Never tried it but I saw someone's DIY one time and it looked very professional.

Well, those sound like good reasons. The price difference between sucky spectrum and good spectrum sure is a lot ain't it?

They produce more heat than MH....So what you save on lighting you will spend on the BIG HONKIN chiller you will need.

The ballast will not fire them.

I asked the same thing and it has to do with the filament used in Halogen lights. It is impossible to make them at the correct spectrum. Sucks, because they are so cheap!

Yeah they make awesome shop lights. I used 4 of them 2 winters ago in my shop (before the heater was in the shop). I was shedding my coat and running around in a t-shirt...lol

If you put a red-removing filter over a red light, you end up with practically no light.

funny you ask.. I just tried this last night after working on the car...

That sucker generates SO much heat its not even funny.
