I'm pro Needlewheel but I have to say MRC makes a nice Beckett. You will be happy.

My argument remains that with daily stirring of a 3/4" sand bed, great circulation, great skimmer, great nutrient export that you can still acheive water purity close to BB. I'd like to hear the argument on this point.

What do you guys think about this? SeanT, Bomber, Weatherman? Would daily stirring of a 1/2inch to 3/4inch fine grain sand bed, deliver similar results of clean water compared to BB systems assuming everything else is the same? Ie. Skimming and intense water flow. Maybe due to the sand just for astestics increase the skimming even higher then current BB setup? This way there isn't a sink to worry about and the small amount of sand can be treated as another organism. The key I think is daily stirring and suspension of distritus and may only work on tanks that are shallow and wide which would allow stirring access to majority of the SSSBA (Super Shallow Sand Bed for Asthetics.). For example just a few pieces of cooked live rock in the center of the tank.

I througly understand the concepts presented here and believe in there simplicity, but I would love to have just a light layer of sand for looks / aquascaping. Since this is not a DSB and applying cleaning techniques borrowed current BB treads maybe we can the the closet thing to the best of both worlds?

Please chime in.

Well it's still a goldfish bowl.

You'll just have to clean it more and you'll have to be consistent with doing that.

This whole thing started because I was having to clean the tank too much and that was taking the fun out of it.

I just finished finished reading this whole thread, its a great way to get your mind off of a final exam (8AM is rough).

I'm about to set up a 30g with 10g sump, and was of course lured into the DSB theory. But a DSB on a standard 30g (36x12x16) would take up 1/4 to 1/3 of the height! Unacceptable in my opinion, so I went looking for other options, and found BBs.

I plan on drilling the tank for at least two bulkheads, but haven't made any final plans or purchases. What would you recommend? A closed loop is not completely out of the question, but I would prefer to Keep It Simple. Originally I had planned on only one drain and one return, with two powerheads to add flow.

The main reason I posted was to ask, have you found any black starboard equivalents? I've always used black substrates in freshwater tanks and thought it brought out colors nicely in plants and fish alike, would the same be true of saltwater? I will continue to search for pictures of SW setups with black bare bottoms.

Hopefully I can find the time and money to join the Minions,
Marty

You can get black starboard if you like it. Although the white has a nice reflective property and give your coral a bit more light to use.

I love the tank pics too

250g reef

Here is a pic of our 10 month old 250g BB/starboard reef:

We almost lost everything due to a tank crash from a 3 yr old sandbed that was set up improperly. I lost many captive grown full sized colonies Luckily over half of the corals pulled through and have recovered and grown very nicely since the transfer All of the sps you see here was grown from frags. In some cases they are over 4 years old. The growth rates I am seeing now are amazing!

I long for the day when my tank is full of corals. I have looked at this thread a few times with envy. Beautiful tanks, all of you!

nice

most of the BB's look awesome! great job to all ,no matter it takes dedication and hard work to get any tank looking good. alas I do enjoy the sand "look" and I just have a little 30 gallon without a DSB only 1.5" of sand it is only 1 year old, but I have no nuisance algae, none, Nada, zippo but from the research I have done it is a time bomb waiting to explode. I hope it doesn't cause I like da sand, well dats my 2 cents, but again y'alls BB are very nice and well done, kudos to all and thanks for taking the time to show us.

Merry Christmas!

Taylor

The previous BB tank I had for about 6 months. I don't have any pic's now, I will try and dig one up.

Here's another shot of the left side of my tank:
