I thought corals were 2 for $40. Unless that was a sale or something.

It probably isnt there job to answer the phone. Scott obviously wants them doing other things.

I actually drove to Scott's from Joliet once, mistakenly thinking they had something in stock that I needed. That's a half hour to forty five minute drive each way for nothing....if they answered their phone, I could have saved the time and trouble....I haven't been there in a few years now....for this very reason. It's obvious to me they don't seek, nor do they need my patronage. Can anyone name ANY other retail establishment with this same arrogance regarding telephone calls?

scotts may have odd business ethics, but for the right things, they are the right place to go. right now, they have a bunch of crocea clams that are on sale for $40, ranging from 3-5 inches. he charges the same price for an sps frag as he does for an enormous, healthy lps, or a softy rock.

the point is, they are the type of place where if you dont know anything, you can get a little taken advantage of or feel stupid, but if you do your homework and are a good aquarist(which of course, we all here at CMAS are!) YOU can be the one to take advantage of THEM. many other store charge according to size and health of a specimen, they dont.

as for their phone, they never have one person manning the register or counter, they are always helping in store customers or on the register, which is about 15 feet away from the phone.

its one thing to have good on the phone customer service, buts its also more important to respect your IN STORE customers more.

-my two cents

dbates....I used to go there ALOT....and I'd be in the store for quite awhile...sometimes they were busy, sometimes they weren't. I can't recall ever hearing the phone RING...much less someone answering it...I'd be willing to bet the ringer is turned off...although I've been wrong before...my point is that they no longer can respect me as an IN STORE customer.....because they don't respect me as a customer that might want to call about an item before making the drive....I've never seen less than 3 or 4 people working there at any given time....and I find it hard to believe that an in store customer would get too irate if they had to wait a minute or two extra for the next employee because the first had to answer the phone. It is, however, their choice....I just wish they realized that they could probably hire a full time receptionist with the profits they lost from just a few of us that USED to spend hundreds per month there....

You cant possibly compare a movie theatre and im sure a multi million doller busn with scotts or any petstore for that matter..

Every place of busn is going to be different.. what works for one may not for others.. but as i said before they must be doing something right even if it means not awnsering a question on the phone..

this is just my 2cents [/B]
Ive heard otherwise, and that they are fairly close (if not there already) to shutting down. I could be wrong, but that what I heard on the grapevine.

Regardless, their in store customer service isn't anything to brag about either.

Motohead....rather than have us speculate and complain, maybe we can ask you....has your friend ever mentioned WHY they don't answer the phone? Are they aware, or do they care that it keeps some folks from coming back?

I heard that during the summer or spring they didn't pay their employees for a straight month, because the funds weren't there. They also lack selection, they only buy from one distributor, which only has the normal run of the mill salt stuff. There are better stores, with better deals, with better employees, with better ethics, that answer the PHONE.

Yes i have asked him quite a few times about the phones or i should say give him greef but you cant teach a old dog new tricks.

I cant say what happins there all the time but the many times i have been in there i have seen him pick up the phone when it rings..

I have never heard any rumors about it being sold but i guess the employee's would probly be the last to know.

I do agree good customer service is key to a great busn and for allowing it to succeed..

Must be on the same grapevine, as this is part of what I heard as well.

i can compare anything i damn well please....it works...i am way more busy then those scotts people over there and i have way more costumers but i still answer the phone when it rings because sure the people in the theatre are my first priority but i still care about the people on the phone...we have this policy at the movie theatre where we keep guests happy...scotts has only ****ed me off since the first time i have been there

i wouldnt get to worked up about it.. if there is a busn that im not happy with i just stop going.. plain and simple..

Good thing we all live in and around chicago where we have a choice and are blessed to have many LFS around us and arent forced to only buy from one place

Is this place the one that does a lot of radio advertising on sports programs and sounds like they're yelling?

The phone thing at Scott's bothers me a little. However, the thing the bothers me the most is when I call Old Orchard aquarium and they don't tell me the price of a particular item. "They can't quote prices over the phone". Thats BS.

That's HILARIOUS!!!! I think I'd ask them what they thought the odds were that I'd buy the item if they told me the price......and then ask them what they thought the odds were that I'd buy the item if I never set foot in the store because they wouldn't tell me the price.....let them decide...

It was brought to my attention by a customer that there was a thread about Scotts Pet Shop......Well Im here to answer those questions.

Q: Why we dont answer the phone?

A: We do answer the phones as much as possible. For anyone who has been in the store when we are busy, you can understand and appreciate the fact that we dont answer the phone at that time. If it is slow, or if Scott is at his desk, we will answer the phone. And no, the ringer on the phone is not shut off.
We currently do not have email, but for individuals who would like to get a hold of us and have not gotten one of us on the phone, fax us your question.
