Might be a mantis shrimp. Try getting a flashlight with a red lense (sp?) and see if you can spot one.

most likely if it was a mantis you cleaner would be gone. My bet would be on a pistol. where is your live rock from?

I would check your live rock at night and keep an eye on your critters cause if its a mantis they are gonners. you can also try and trap whatever is in there I found an easy way get a glass and tip it at an angle and drop a piece of shrimp in it and let it sit over night. the little bugger will go to get the shrimp but the glass is too slick for him to get out. or you can you the inverted bottle top trap. good luck

If you hear one snap, mantis is more likely; several in a row, it's probably a pistol shrimp. That's what I've read and in my case it turned out to be correct (I had 3 mantis and 1 pistol). The mantis shrimp I had were all too small to do any damage and I got them eventually by catching them in a rock and flushing with freshwater for a minute or two.

mantis will also make the sound like a for lack of a better term a drumroll. Depending on what type mantis you have.

no pistols are good guys, but if its a mantis get it the heck out of there. they are killers, but they are awesome pets, they have so much personality. but they have to be in a species only tanks.

btw the clicking symptoms aer a generality I don't think that there is a sure fire way to tell one from the other without a visual. not sure but I also think I heard somewhere that mantis will click or snap when ever and pistols will start up at once the lights are out. again not proven by any means on my part

Actually you got that reversed.

to be 100% you need to see it. Best bet is to set a trap in the tank near the clicking bait it and wait and see what turns up. (may take a few days or longer)

Yes blorkiemom, you need to reverse that. One or two clicks is a Pistol shrimp and if yo hear several clicks if will be a mantis. But I have also heard that several clicks could be a female pistol shrimp trying to defend her babies. SZWAB is right on with setting up a trap next to the clicking sound. But it may take longer than a few days to catch it, it has taken me five or six months to try and catch the mantis in my tank, I still have had no luck yet.

Well, dang me. No doubt I did--but I guess my pistol shrimp is a weirdo, because it definitely clicks several times in a row. My (mis)memory was that the single click is from a mantis attack while the multiples are a pistol shrimp warning system. Live and learn! Thanks for the correction.

My pistol makes a sound like someone throwing rocks at the glass it may be one click or two or three in a row.

I would also like to know where the live rock came from.

I hear clicks in my tank every night. I've had this thing over a year and it has been torn down and moved and I've never been able to find any shrimp larger than mysis that I didn't buy on purpose. Maybe, one day, I'll find the little booger.

Thanks...hmmm

I'm going to guess a pistol. I've never heard a mantis for myself though.
