To trigger or not to Trigger

Finally getting sick of seeings Damsel's !!

Tank is ready for some fish!

My 90 FOWLR needs some Character!

What would you suggest I put in it.....
I want some fish with Personality that will not out grow the 90. The 180 will go up Next year!!

I like the Lion's a lot....as well as the Triggers... And the Bannana Wrasses are cool too...
Longnose Hawk looks cool as well...
I want color too....Like a Blue Tang or a Flame Angel, Catalina Goby...etc.....

you can put a blue tang in there but that might mean more peaceful fish.

I think a 90 is too small for a blue tang - they are so active.

Personally - I have a picasso trigger in my 90 and in my experience I would not add a trigger to a 90 again except an undulate(which will be the only fish you could keep in the tank). My trigger is relatively small, only about 4" but he is already so active that I think the tank is too small for him. They are super active fish. I really feel like he needs/deserves the extra 2' of a 125(now if only I had the space and money...).

If you buy a trigger - I think you need to know up front that in 4-5 years you will need to get rid of the trigger or buy a bigger tank. They are great fish, but I think most of them are kept in tanks that are too small.

Yes - Catalinas I think prefer water in the 68-72 degree range, which is about 8-10 cooler than any tank I have ever run

That and I would say catalina + lions = bad!!
Even wrasses and triggers might pick on the goby.

catalinas need water that is in the mid 50's their success rate in captivity is near impossible unless you do a coldwater reef I would def not suggest going with that fish

Is it that cold? Wow - I knew they needed cold water but I didn't realize it had to be that cold.

i personally really like niger triggerfish... a beautiful fish who is damn hardy and gets is one of the least aggressive triggers but like mentioned above, that tank may be too small for him.

A 90 really is too small... I confess I have a niger in my 90 - but I regret it - it was a result of me not doing enough research early on and now I am dealing with the consequences... from my experience I think they should have a 180. That's kind of what I am hoping for with mine.

One thing I did not know when I bought my niger is that they often grow to 16"-18", not 12" as some sources will tell you.

If you got one that was only about a half an inch that would be ok tell march but if I were you I would still hold off on getting the new fish what if something happens were you need the money that you were going to spend on the fish then what would your niger do in that little tank for an extra year? Of course if you're a millionaire then you have no such concern, and go for it now

If the 180 is going up next year get a small version of an out of the ordinary Trigger like a Crosshatch or the Orange tail. Both are "friendly" as triggers go

If you are positive of a 180 in the future then I cant hesitate suggesting a Holacanthus Angel and a Thalassoma Wrasse. I had blast watching these in my 125g FOWLR, although the 7" wrasse did end up picking on the 3" Passer Angel that attempted to bully him. Gotta watch out for those Holacanthus!

Probably would be ok for 3-4 years. But putting it in a 180 as soon as possible would make for a happy fish!.

They are quite pretty before they go in and rend and shred all who oppose them.... or who try to occupy their space....
