I got them from my LFS. The male was black when I got him, and the female was kinda red but she turned black and now she is light red/orange color this week.

I have a male SH that looks a lot like yours. I have been trying to figure out which species he is. Do you know what kind yours is?

They are both beautiful. The male looks like a reidi, and though hard to tell from the pic, the female looks like an erectus. I could be wrong though, hard to tell from that angle. Beautiful seahorses!!

Yes, he is deifnately reidi. Too many spots to be erectus. Good find at a LFS! Are they CB?

Definately not an erectus. I collect erectus locally in NY and yours is not one. Here is an article I published in "The Breeders Registry" there is a picture of an erectus in it.
Good luck.

This is an erectus click They have lines running through their bodies and those saddle patches on their back like my female ZigZag. The yellow female in that picture in the article doesn't look like an erectus, it has too high of a coronet and it has too many spikes. It looks like a histrix or barb. It is not good to have two different species in the same tank, some species have immunities to some diseases while others dont.
Take care
Alyssa

Alyssa, I took that picture in the article and if I remember I collected those seahorses in NY. We only have erectus here but you may be correct, it was about ten years ago that I wrote that article so one of the seahorses may have been different. That picture was not taken in my reef so I could have been mistaken.
These top two pictures I took in my reef so I know they are erectus. The female is transfering the eggs.

I looked up on Seahorse.org at their identity page and I would have to agree that my male is a reidi. They won't mate will they?

There is a possibility, there have been hybrids. Reidi and erectus would make quite a looker Paul, those still dont look like erectus to me. Go onto seahorse.org and look at the gallery of barbouri seahorses. They look more like yours than erectus. We will see what other peoples opinions will be on that. Gorgeous, fat seahorses by the way. (thats a good thing )

Alyssa, if they are barbouri than thats whats swimming off the south shore of Long Island NY.
It could be worse. If I get time this summer I will try to collect some.
Take care.

The male looks like a reidi and the female looks like a barbouri, but I'm not to sure on her.

Here I thought I had one kind of seahorses and they are 2 total different species.

Still looks like a erectus to me. The body shape leads me to that. The barbs are very spikey and slender with little brown striped snouts.

They are beautiful. Your male looks a lot like one of my males and I just spotted another one in my LFS. The breeder told them it was a Reidi. Your female doesn't look like a Redi to me.

I agree with sealover--your female looks like an Erectus to me. Beautiful horses.

Thank you all. I would have to agree with you all on the female being a erectus, I didn't see it at first but now I do.

I have a male Barb and two female Reidi and they just had babies last week. He is now full with eggs again and is quite plump. I didnt think they would/ could breed but they are on the 3ed litter/ herd now. They are so very tiny & its unreal how cute they are.
