Maybe I misunderstood the dwgs Why did you mount the baffles sideway? Most I have seen are up and down....You may want to raise the wall of the fug' a little bit....just to make sure things stay in a bit....

This is for my 170g.

The baffles are mount sidewat instead of up and down to maximize the distance, this should allow the micro bubbles to to rise to the surface before reaching the refugium. I have not actually tried this before, but saw it in someone else's design.

Those refugium baffles seem pretty darn low. Why not make them 6.5 inches. If they are too low the flow across the top is going to disturb what is in the refugium portion.

Hi,

The sump wall was lowered because if I raised it to high, the water in the last section would evaporate rapidly and the pump risk running dry (just in case). I intend to use fine plastic mesh screen to raise the sump wall, coupled with the caulerpa growth, this should slow down the turbulence considerably.

One concern I see, is that with the baffles being set up this way is that your water level will fluctuate throughout the sump. I have my skimmer pump in the end section of my current sump and as the water level fluctuates with evaporation and such the skimmers level also changes. With this change its efficiency also changes.

It is a minor point but..

that is certainly something to be considered. I actually have thought of moving the Skimmer (Turbo skimmer) out of the sump altogether (mounting it externally). But then the skimmer inlet would have to be mount close to the refugium and I didn't want all the life down there to get sucked into skimmer.

May be I will come up with a way to plumb it.

Has anyone tried plumbing the inlet directly into the skimmer? (not using powerhead) would this effect the skimmer efficiency?

Looking for some more opinions...

In my current sump, most of the detritus gets trap in the first chamber. So I figure it would be beneficial to direct the detritus into the refugium section.

However, this means that the Skimmer needs to be moved to after the refugium. What do you think? will this be a better design?

I would have put the refugium in the first position anyway. This way you can tee off the drain (with a gate valve) so you can control the flow into the refugium. Then the majority of water can drain into the second chamber (skimmer).

You can now make the refugium with a single baffle (on the right) and make it taller for more volume.
