stupid question?

Will a standard dimension (kinda thin for aquascaping a reef) 55 gallon aquarium fit underneath a 55 gallon aquarium stand as a sump?

None of the stands Ive seen other than the old iron ones would work. The stands are usually built so the front and side panels will be under the rim of the tank for support. You would need to build something.

Would a 55 fit underneath a 75 gallon stand?

I fit a 20long under a 75 gallon stand. Had to put it in through the top of the stand. Cross your fingers and hope that the sump never needs to be removed. Have you considered a rubbermaid storage bin as your sump? They come in all sizes.

Well once I buy a new aquarium, I will have my current 55 gallon free to use and I was hoping to use it as a good size sump and fuge.

Probably, but measure first. Plan to place the sump BEFORE putting the 75 on the stand. I use a 55 under a 160, but I built the stand to accomodate it.
