goby and shrimp compatability? pic included!

I have had a high fin red banded goby for about 3-4 months now and wanted to pair him with a pistol shrimp of some sort. I was wondering if this is likely even though they will be added at seperate times? Also what kinds of shrimp will pair with this kind of fish? Here is an example(not my picture...Picture is doRee's):

The hi fin gobies symbiont shrimp is Alpheus randalli. They should pair up even if added seperately. Here is a picture of the shrimp.

I bought a hi-fin red banded goby a week before I found a pistol shrimp. As soon as the shrimp dug a borrow, the goby moved right in. Good luck to you also.

goby and shrimp

Here is a picture of my goby and shrimp (in a 3/4 gallon).
I love watching them together.

They got seperated when my porcelain crabs decided they wanted the goby/shrimp cave but found each other 2 days later and have been happy again ever since.

The pistol is now in the bad boys tank. After eating a rainford goby, & spousal abuse to his hi-fin red banded goby partner.
Also ate most of the damsels, a large sally light foot crab, & removed some legs off a large blue legged hermit in the bad boys tank.

Wow, that is a bad pistol. Mine will kill my other shrimp/crabs over time but they never bother any fish.

Prugs:

I'm doing some research on pistol shrimps right now so please bare with me. How did you come about this shrimp? Did it hitchike on carribean live rock? I heard that only the pacific/indo pistol shrimp will host well with gobies...

Check out what phil had to say on another thread:

Oh and not all pistols are blind (like the atlantic species). They are very good at spotting me and hiding and do not care for any symbiotic relationship with gobys from the pacific. ...that one prug's posted looks to me like one of the pistols that have hitched on my gulf of mexico live rock - they don't pair with fish.

Yes this pistol sees very well. It recognises me as the guy who feeds him. Bought him/her from a lfs. Red/orange body with light blue legs.

Did the guys at the lfs tell you it would pair off with the goby?

On another note...how is that high fin...does it bother any conspecifics or smaller fish and shrimp (like sexies)?

The above red pistol shrimp Alpheus fasqueli is not a partner shrimp and feeds on all meat it can get. This species as well as these Alpheus bisincisus, Alpheus soror, and Alpheus tricolor are wonderfull in color and regularly in Europe in trade. But they are no partner shrimps!

Peter:

That website is awesome. I've added it to my internet favorites.
Which shrimp are commensal with gobies? If the ones you mentioned are basically meat eaters...does that mean the symbiotic shrimps are mainly scavengers?

I just bought a tiger pistol shrimp from saltwaterfish.com, Is there any other gobies besides the watchman goby that will satisfy their symbiotic relationship?
