IMO you can't go wrong with a percula. For two fish add a mandarin. If you feel gutsy add a flame angel, just make sure its the same size as the clown.

What does anyone else think?

No mandarin in a 10 gallon. The pod population would be wiped out in no time and the fish would starve.

I've got 1 green chromis in my 10g. Clowns, firefish and small gobies are good choices too, IMO. Angelfish, mandarins, and tangs are not good choices long-term, IMO. Actually, you might get by with a mandarin if you had a 75 gallon refugium.
FWIW,
Mariner

How about if you fed the mandarin along with any of the food it finds on its own?

As far as the flame angel, would a 29G tank be suitable?

I am in the process of setting up a 29g tank and these are the fish that I would like to keep.

A mandarin requires at least a 50g that has been established for at least 6 months. And then you need a constant source of pods and something for the pods to hide in and reproduce (like a plastic strawberry basket turned upside down with LR in it -- the fish cannot get in and the pods are safe until they venture out). If the mandarin eats other foods that are not live, say frozen brine, or flake food than I guess you would be successful but I think the mandarins that eat that way are few and far between.

I want a mandarin too so I am in the process of planning an 80g tank with a refugium to propagate pods.

Good luck!

brett, the fish you can choose from really depends on your perspective of keeping fish. if you look at it like you can buy a small fish, and when he outgrows the tank, then move him to a bigger tank, or sell him back, then you've got LOTS of options, the only barriers being tangs, and really delicate fish like mandarins, anthias, butterfly's, etc.

if you believe that you should choose your fish in the beginning, and leave enough room for them to completely grow out, then your options are a lot more limited, but there's still a lot of fish to choose from.

i personally think clownfish are over-rated. so i would probably go with a cherub angel (only grow to a maximum of 3") and probably some type of goby (or blenny) and a shrimp of some sort.

litespeeds, that rule is there for a purpose. just because the fish can fit in a tank that small doesn't mean that they're happy. they like a LOT of swimming room, and cramming 2 tangs in a 10 gallon tank is like forcing an olympic sprinter to live in a 12'x12' room for the rest of his life.

activecactus, you really need to research your fish ideas. mandarins will not accept prepared foods, they will only graze on live rock, and they do it a LOT. i know they're probably the coolest fish out there, but you've got to resist.

a flame angel would probably be ok IMO in a 29g with plenty of swimming room, but would much happier in a larger tank.

Thanks for the advice Jason, I guess I'll hold off on that mandarin until I get a larger tank.

Yea...I need to do research before I open my mouth.
sorry all.

i had a nice black velvet damsel in my 12, and decided a diadema dottyback would be a great addition since its so small and colorful. NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he's a killa. took two days to finish off the damsel. i found an aiptasia anemone on the LR, so i brought home a peppermint shrimp. he didn't last 24 hours. geez, what a freakin bad ***. and there are plenty of hiding places in the LR. and i just found an empty hermit crab shell yesterday. guess the cleanup crew is going to need hazardous duty pay, along with some serious fire power!

ive kept a 10 gallon nano for a year. ide advise all of you not to get more than 2 fish, and to avoid damsels. the first fish i got was a baby tomato clown, then i added a purple firefish. they were the best of friends, until a mantis came in on a rock and well,

RIP firefish....

i later added a royal gramma, which jumped out of the tank.....

now al i have is a tomato clown. in a few days or so i plan to add a clown goby. 10 gallons are easy to keep. about the 2 tangs, even if they are babies, tanks wayyy too small. i dont mean to flame or anything, but why would you do that? did you not research anything?
