Need Help with Fans
Hi all...
I am building a enclosure for a 250 MH light... I want to put a 3" fan in it for flow ... I have decided tat the best ( most cost efficient) option is to buy some nice ball bearing computer fans... I got some and now the problem is ... how do I wire a DC fan into this enclosure... I mean I could plop a computer power supply down and run it that way.. but... I am going to have about 6 fans total to power ... how should I wire these up?? Thanks, Brian |

I would just go to Radio Shack and buy a wall wart (IE: plug in 12v transformer) for a few bucks and cut the plug off and wire it up. I think that would be the easiest way to do it. One for each fan or two you want to run. You will need to look at how much amperage the fans consume and then look at the specs on the transformer to decide how many fans you can run on each transformer. Or you could spend a few more bucks and get one of these 12v Power supply and power all of them at once. I've seen this type of power supply on EBay for next to nothing at times.

You can get some pretty heft 1-1.5 amp AC-DC converters that are basically class 2 transformers also, instead of a box-like one from RS.
I went overboard in one thread on running several fans off of one adapter in parallel. If you do so, I'd suggest getting several of the male 1/8" plug connectors, and run the wiring around the top of the hood to one spot. Then, simply plug your AC-DC adapter in, and your good. Also pretty easy to hook of a light sensor to turn the fans on when the lights go on, or just put it on the same power strip as the lights. My over winded post was here: http://archive.reefcentral.com/forum...&highlight=fan |
