Lightbulb Lighting

What lighting is everyone using for their reef tank with hard corals?

I have bird's nest, frogspawn, and hammers in my (mostly softies) reef, and all of that seems to be doing very well with my T5's.

Well I kinda got screwed on my light. What I ended up with wasn't what I was supposed to get.... so now we're looking into upgrades. Wondering what everyone recommended.

T-5's and MH are best. Dont waste your money on PC's

That depends on what you are looking for. IMHO, MH's are better for reefs, but with that you have to watch out for temperature spikes, and depending on the wattage you use, you may need to consider getting a chiller or something of that nature to help control and stabilize the temp in your tank.

T5's will produce much less heat, and are pretty strong lights. Much stronger then PC's, but not as good as MH's. So, and this is just my opinion, if you're looking for "easy but effective" for hard corals, T5's would be my recommendation. If you're looking to get the best you can, personally, I think MH's (supplimented by a couple 48 inch actinics) are the best, depending on the types of bulbs you get .

Like I said, I have T5's, and I am happy with them. They are good on my tank, but I see people that have MH's on their tanks, and compare that with the lighting that I have, and I think theirs is better usually, but I think mine is easier, usually.

Sorry, wish I could be more definitive for you

I have a four foot wide tank very similar to yours probably. I'm using the following setup:

Aquactinics Constellation 7x54W T5-HO fixture with these bulbs:
ATI Blue Plus
UVL Super Actinic
ATI Pro Color
ATI Aquablue
GE 6500K Daylight
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Aquablue

The tank is entirely SPS now (all frags, mostly purchased through the buy/sell forums here) and all appear to be doing great and growing nicely.

I prefer the color (spectrum) emitted from this setup better than my 2x150W 16k MH setup, though I admit I do miss the shimmer that metal halide provides.
