Which pump?
I'm going to change my plumbing and want to get an external return pump to use for the main tank and a new fuge or frag tank. I'm not sure how big it needs to be - maybe 1500-2500 gph?
Any recommendations? -Mike |

What size is the tank? What else you are you using for flow? I would look at a Reeflo Barracuda

I'm going to set up a 75 gallon stock tank/sump and use the pump as a return to my 58 gallon main tank, a return to the 75 gallon I'm going to set up as either a frag tank or a fuge, and possibly use it to feed the Octopus TDNW-300 skimmer I got from you.
I'm not as concerned about noise since it will be in a tank room. I'd also like to use it for a 225G main tank that I need to get off my butt and purchase. -Mike |

The Reeflo pumps are quiet I have a barracuda if you want to hear it running. My tank does not look that great but you are welcome to swing by.

I had an external pump (PCX55 HP) which drove me nuts with the noise. My set up is in my basement but I could here it everywhere in my house. I do not know how much you want to spend but on the low end ebay has a guy selling new Dolphin (2000 gph) in the sump or out pumps for 60.00 plus shipping. To answer your question I use a mag 12 from my sump to the main tank it seems powerful enough.

I run 2 Iwaki70's in my fish room AND a big beckett. One pump is the main retrun going to both tanks and the frag tank, 4 outlets total It doesn't sound loud to me but maybe I'm deaf. I'm thinking of changing it out for an Iwaki100. I've had great luck with the Iwaki's but they are power hungry. They do take pressure great though and if needed you can put eductors on the outlets and get a huge increase. That doesn't work on non-pressure rated pumps. If you go with an Iwaki make sure it's the Japanese motor. All are known for good life but the Japanese motors are known for more.

I"m with Dr. Roy on this one for sure. I've been running Iwaki pumps for over 16 years, one of them has been running that long too! They use a little more power but you can't beat the reliability. They are also fairly easy to replace bearings on, that is the only thing I've had to do to them other than occasional cleaning.

I have been in Roy's fish room and it's not loud at all.

Come over some eve or have a pizza night. Problem is Andy's closes earlier than we do pizza nights.

Oh, another plus for the bigger Iwaki's is that they are 1" inlet and 1" outlet at pump rating.
