Does anyone recommend any certain kind? I have a 36" tank.

Check out Champion's Deepwater Moonlight, it is by far the brightest available at 4w. It's like a mini halide on my tank.

not to thread hijack or anything but are they benificial or are they purely asthetic?

leave them on. The effect is mainly aesthetic. They may promote spawning in some species. You will see many creatures under only your moonlights that you would normally not come out under your actinics.
