Question lionfish

so i told my son Thomas that he could pick out the next fish for "our" tank. I was thinking we would go to CF and pick something out... well, today he tells me he wants a lionfish.

I need opinions/experience here... are there any lionfish species that are reef safe and won't eat my other fish?

I have a mated false perc pair, green chromis, blue hippo tang, pajama cardinal, and a coral banded shrimp.

coral are colt, leathers, ricordia, shrooms, xenia, gsp, zoas, pavona, frogspawn, gorgonian (like the one Gary has), neon green trumpet, blue palys, and yellow polyps.

what does everyone think? I'll gladly tell him a lionfish won't work in our tank, but I need to know that I'm not lying to him...

I have kept dwarfes in reefs before but they will eat all shrimp and you would be suprised at the size fish they can eat. I would be worried about your cardinals and chromis. I bought them to eat a bunch of damsels I could not catch, it worked

sounds like the lionfish is out... the chromis is very small, smaller than most damsels you see at LFS.

I would stay away, they are also poop factories. I have kept aggrressive saltwater for a lot longer then reefs and there is not much I havnt tried and my lions were only second to puffers in the mess department. They make a great species tank I would do it again in a heartbeat if my wife wouldnt move out on me

Lionfish can be kept in reef aquaria but you're creating a really challenging situation- especially if you want to keep other fishes and be successful at growing corals.
Most Lions are better kept in an aggressive FO system.

When my lion was in my fo only setup he managed to eat a Aus harlequin tusk a trigger as well as a tang. When I orginally bought him he was tiny but he managed to grow very rapidly. I don't think I would put one in a reef tank
