which is more meneficial to SPS: 420nm or 450nm

I am currently running Phoenix 14k on HQI and supplementing with UVL super actinics which spike in the 420nm range. I don't see much of a difference with the T5's on and I'm thimking of switching to ATI Blue Plus which spike in the 450nm range. Which is more beneficial in terms of color?

without getting too into it, different cladses of proteins and zooxanthellae will utilize different spectrums. there is no definitive answer that say wavelength X will be better than Y, or vice versa. either will be fine.

They are both important. Many people running 20K's suppliment with actinics for a reason. 20k's are peaking in 450 - 460 and actinics peak in 420nm. Without the 420nm, your corals will loose a lot of GFP. Not sure of the spectrum peak of a Phoenix (dont have one to test), but I would imagine running one of each would be sufficient. I run T5's using blue + and I noticed a big loss in GFP. After switching a few SA's into the mix I have noticed a huge change.

The phoenix is a 450nm spiked bulb. I too have the phoenix and 2x T5s on my tank and it really doesn't matter visually if I have the blue plus or the SA... the phoenix is much, much brighter and you can barely tell if the T5s are on. In either combo you just get "hrmm, thats a tad bluer" when the T5s are on.

That being said I run one SA and one blue plus because thats what I have on hand. When the blue pluses are used up I will probably just go to all SA.

IME, you need both 450nm and 420nm for some corals. Until recently I have run my system w/ a single Hamilton 175w 14K (450nm). I have always had a few corals that I just could not keep although my water param's were perfect. I was having trouble w/ some new arrivals so, just for kicks, I put a hood I have been working on (for a new setup) over the tank that has 1 175w Hamilton 14K MH (450nm) and 2 URI Super Actinic R's (420nm). Wouldn't you know that very same day the corals I had been having trouble w/ opened more then they every have. And since I have not had a single trouble w/ any of my previous hard to keep species.
