PVC RO/DI system with polyfilter...Will it actually work???
I am looking into getting an RO/DI system but I found these instructions. Basically all you do is jam a bunch of Polyfilter into a PVC pipe with an endcap on the end with a small hole drilled in the endcap. How effective will this be? Is it worth doing or should I invest in a RO/DI system?

Reverse Osmosis purification ...cost effective
..an RO is sufficient to purify you tap-water improve 80-90% SiO2 concentration DI is do better just DO change Pre-filter frequently and DI cartridge when exhaustion Last edited by Tranquility; 01/01/2008 at 06:21 PM. |

I can't imagine this would do anything beneficial. I agree, don't even waste the $10 to assemble this.

Look up the Kold Steril unit.

Ok I found some Kold Steril stuff...pretty neat...seems to maybe be cheaper than traditional RO/DI? Anyway enough of that and back to the original topic. Making a PVC filter with polyfil wouldn't be effective...unless could effectively add a DI stage, then yes, a DIY DI unit is very possible. I've seen a few actually and know DI resin can be bought in bulk by the cubic foot I do believe. So this would be a good thing for someone looking for 1000GPD, as replacing their media would be cost effective and easy. The mark up on DI resin is crazy. There are plenty of people that just use DI to purify there water....it really depends on the source of water and your location. Now for the RO, I'm clueless ![]() ![]()

Basically ... jamming a ton of Polyfilter into a PVC pipe (with end caps) would be nothing more than a 'DIY Sediment Filter'. A sediment filter is typically the very first stage in any RO unit’s (or RO/DI unit’s) water purification process. The purpose of the sediment filter is to remove any large debris for the most part and that’s it.
Even a low budget RO unit is capable of dwindling down tap water that has a TDS reading of 300 down to 1-3 TDS all by itself. If one used DI then they will surely be down to 0 TDS. I wouldn’t waste your time with such a project, actually I would like to know where you found these plans and what this inverter stated regarding it’s performance. I would shop around when choosing a RO or RO/DI unit and I would first like to suggest checking out www.thefilterguys.biz these guys have a ROCK SOLID product and even better customer support. |
