Rinsing Sand

Seems like I've seen this discussed before, but...
I've got 3 bags of Agramax Select for my new 90 gal...the bags say to rinse the sand, but I know some people have different opinions. Ideas????

I would rinse it. I recently set up without rinsing and not only did it take a bit for the fine particles to settle but, there was alot of dust on the aquarium walls and on the surface of the water. I just thought it would be easier putting it in dry but it didn't work out that way.

I vote for rinsing as well just to remove the finer sediments but it is my least favorite tank related job! I used a kiddie wading pool and just poured sand in there and ran a hose while I sloshed and rinsed, much better than my first attempt at endless rinsing in a 5 gal bucket

Some sands are better than others with respect to rinsing. With that stuff, I'd rinse. That is the stuff with some real variation in particle size, right? Even some good size rocks in there?

Actually, it's a pretty consistent grain - not the absolute finest, but a very fine sand...I'm debating the rinsing vs. allowing the cloudiness to take a day or two to get filtered out....

why not pour a bit into a 5 gal bucket and fill with water just to see how much will settle and if you will get a film on top of the water - kind of a mini test to see if it would be worth the rinsing

it's always gonna look cloudy when you rinse it. just be safe and rinse for any possible contaminates. the trick is to add the sand to saltwater so the ph is high enough to not dissolve caco3. otherwise a precipitation reaction occurs like what happens when you add to much sodium bicarbonate to saltwater.

when you put new live sand in a cycling tank, is it better to run the power heads and skimmer while the tank settles or turn everything off to speed up the process. seems like it not settling at all with the maxijets running.
