I use a U tube type overflow.Place a piece of airline tubing in the U tube. Place the U tube in place, one end in the tanks box the other end in the box outside the tank. Ensure that both ends of the U tube are under water(you will most likely have to add water to the O/S box) Now just suck the ir out of the tube and your siphon should start. Caution (salt water tastes pretty nasty )

I use a balloon on one end, fill it with water (the U tube) then balloon the other end. put it in place and remove the ballons, siphon starts.

you could use the method that CRP uses with the TOM aqua lifter. Drill the top of your utube and stick in the aqua lifter just a little bit and put the other end in the drain side. That will always keep a constant syphon going and if your power ever goes out, once it comes on the awualifter will ensure your syphon is still there.

Don't drill your u-tube! It will hold a siphon fine in a power outage. As long as you have decent volume going thru it the bubbles will siphon out too.
