I need answers quick!!

I had a 55g fish only tank with lava rock in it (red kind). I sold it shortly after I put the lava rock in it so I don't know if the lava rock caused any adverse reactions. I ran into some today at the LFS and bought 25 lbs worth just to spice up the rock work with different colors. I am now reading mixed reports about the red lava rock, leaching the water, releasing elements and so on. So does ANYBODY have any currently in their fish only system? Has anybody used it in the past and noticed any adverse reactions? Quick answers appreciated as this rock has been in my tank for 3 hours.

Why don't you do a reef tank?

I may, i have only a damsel cycling now. I just don't wonna start out the wrong way. I'm not cheap, I just have too much into the system now and am trying to save a LITTLE money by buying base rock and seeding with live.

In The Modern Reef Aquarium Vol 1 it says "We always try to dissuade aquarists from using lava. It's impossible to know which other materials it includes. Most often it contains harmful metalic compounds."(Svein A Fossa,Alf Jacob Nilsen.)

Metal leaching from the rock would be my concern. pH swings is also a possiblility depending on what actually was spit out by the earth at that moment. Some things that may work fine in freshwater aquariums won't do well in salt water. Many common freshwater fish are more accustomed to contaminents and lower pH than saltwater fish. Very different environments.

My theory is if its for fresh ans salt. THen it can't be good for saltwater especially reef systems.

Man, i'm even more torn. I guess i'll take it out. Only cost 50 cents a pound so it won't be that much of a waste.

Don't forget how lava is formed. Besides it doesn't look all that great anyway.

What kind of question is that? Has the poster indicated he was considering one or the other?

To answer the poster's question, I would not use lava rock as I would be too worried about something leaching.

Get some polyfilter, snip off a bit and run it in the water column. If it turns blue, red, or black, it's metal.
