Adding Fuge to existing system
hi, I have a 90 gallon reef with a shallow sandbed that has been up for about 8 months and would like to add a fuge. I'm planning on using a 33 gal tank with a DSB oolithic sugan fine sand being used
My question is this: do i need to setup the fuge separate from the main system and wait for it to cycle etc before connecting to the reef? I'm thinking that this new fuge is no different than a new tank and it will need to stabilize itself before intro to the main system. Cyno \diatoms stage etc is my concern as i dont want to push a new tank cycle into the cycled 90 gallon system. An option to avoid this i suppose would be to setup the new fuge with livesand, cured rock rubble etc but I don't think this is going to be an option. your opinions would be appreciated ! thanks, Jeff |

Not likely, 33g on a 90 is nothing- of course if you had said 90g, my answer might be different. It never hurts to cycle it ahead of time, but I probably wouldn't bother...

When I added my 65 gal sump to my 120. I just looked at it as another water change.

thanks for the replies. A sump is really only extra water volume being added. Its the deep sand bed really thats in question.
any other comments? thanks |

If your using base sand it shouldn't be a problem. It will seed quickly anyway and won't cycle. I would recommend against the stuff in bags with water. If there was anything alive in it ever, its probably dead now and could cause a cycle...
