I took out all my bio balls, reattached new pvc piping and now I'm using it as a refugium. All you need is a clip on light, some LR and macro algae. It actually makes your tank even more low maintanence, less water changes, more stable, etc.

how about what i did by removing the bio balls and leaving it comletly empty? I was told that my live rock in the tank is enough?

If you convert it into a refugium it has a lot of benefits. Grows pods for your tank inhabitants, takes nutrient out of the water that cause algae problems, and acts as an extension of your LR and DSB for biofiltration. Leaving it empty, IMO, is kind of a waste of space that could be used to benefit your tank.

After all my balls are gone ,what next? Should i remove sponge and let it keep on trickeling over my phosphate filter pad?

I use a sponge prefilter in my system. Clean it At least twice a week. It collects a lot of junk that you do not want leaching back into the tank.

I lost my balls 14 yrs ago right after i got married...lol

seriously, I would remove a little at a time [ a handfull each week] till there all gone and replace with live rock.
