moving light rack

I am interested in setting up a lighting rack that will move the lights back and forth across the tank. It will be for a frag tank and looks are not a big factor. I want to do this so I can use less halides for more coverage. I know there was someone on here who had I think was a 40 breeder and they had one halide that moved across the tank to cover the whole thing and then supplemented with flourescents. Any ideas or links are welcome.

About the cheapest commercial light mover can be found at lightrail3.com
Of sourse this being the DIY section you can build your own. A cheap BBQ rotisserie can be had for about $20. They turn slow enough and are auto-reversing so all you need to figure out is a rail system and some drive/idler wheels. It can be done fairly cheap if you have the tools to work with metal. I am planning a light mover for a 75 myself and already have most of the parts, just need the time. Good luck

you could do a pendulum type thing... just swing the light back and forth...

not the most efficient thing but it could work...

I would probably just go with the Light Rail 3.5. I had one of these over my tank and they work really well. They are moisture resistant, which is probably not the case for the typical diy light mover. You can find one for about $150, but it is well worth the money.

I have one on my 8' 240 gallon tank and am very happy with it. Marine Depot sells them. Items # SL2931 and SL2933. I have the 10 RPM model.

I use the Light Rail 3.5 6 rpm units and they work great.
